By 5th grade students are using a variety of strategies to multiply. All of the strategies take advantage of the distributive property of multiplication. The first video shows how the distributive property can be used for multi-digit multiplication of whole numbers.

By the end of 4th grade most students are familiar with using the box method to multiply. This strategy allows students to organize and keep track of how they are using the distributive property. After this strategy is mastered students are then able to move to the area model.
